CNC Turning Surface Finishes
CNC Turning Surface Finishes
CNC turned parts generally have a smooth as-machined finish, particularly on cylindrical surfaces produced by the lathe. Compared with milled surfaces, turned diameters typically show lower surface roughness and a more uniform appearance. However, tool marks may still be visible on areas created by secondary operations, such as flats, slots, keyways, drilled holes, and milled features.Surface finishing can be applied to improve appearance, corrosion resistance, and durability. Aluminum parts are commonly anodized, bead blasted, or powder coated, while stainless steel parts are often passivated, polished, or bead blasted. Carbon steel parts may be plated, black oxidized, or coated, depending on application requirements. For standard machined parts, typical surface roughness can reach Ra 125 µin, while secondary finishing can further improve appearance, corrosion resistance, and wear performance depending on the selected material and geometry.

As machined
This finish leaves the surface directly from the CNC machine, providing a cost-effective option with visible tool marks.
Sanding & Polishing
This process smooths the surface by removing tool marks, resulting in a refined finish with varying levels of gloss and texture.
Sand, Bead Blasted
This process creates a uniform, matte texture by propelling fine abrasive particles onto the surface, removing imperfections and tool marks.
Painted
A protective and aesthetic coating is applied to the surface, offering a smooth, uniform finish with customizable colors and textures.
Powder coat
A durable, wear-resistant finish applied electrostatically and cured under heat, providing a uniform, protective coating in various colors.
Anodized
An electrochemical process that enhances surface durability, corrosion resistance, and appearance, available in various colors with a smooth or matte finish.
E-Coating
An electrostatically applied coating that provides a uniform, corrosion-resistant finish with excellent adhesion, commonly used for protective and aesthetic purposes.
Nickel Plating
An electrostatically applied coating that provides a uniform, corrosion-resistant finish with excellent adhesion, commonly used for protective and aesthetic purposes.
CNC Turning Tolerances
For standard CNC turning projects, we apply general tolerances based on part geometry, material type, and feature complexity. These tolerances represent our default manufacturing capability and ensure a consistent balance between precision and cost efficiency. Tighter tolerances can be achieved upon engineering review when required. The table below summarizes our standard CNC turning tolerance guidelines, including dimensional accuracy, thread specifications, surface finish, and edge condition requirements.
![]() |
|
| Feature | General Tolerance |
| Linear Dimensions | ±0.10 mm |
| Hole Diameters | ±0.13 mm |
| Shaft Diameters | ±0.13 mm |
| Threads | Per standard thread class and drawing requirements |
| Surface Finish | As-machined (Ra 125 µin) unless otherwise specified |
| Edge Condition | Sharp edges broken unless otherwise noted on drawing |
Ultra-precision requirements require extra finishing operations. Please mark all tolerance standards clearly on your engineering drawings.

What precision can you achieve for CNC turned rotary parts?
Our standard dimensional tolerance is ±0.125 mm. With fine turning, we can reach tight tolerance up to ±0.005 mm. Custom tolerance requirements marked on drawings are acceptable.
What kinds of parts fit CNC turning processing?
CNC turning is ideal for rotary components: shafts, sleeves, pins, studs, rollers, threaded fittings and spherical parts. Complex non-rotary profiles are recommended for CNC milling.
Can you provide surface finishing for turned parts?
Yes. We offer polishing, anodizing, sandblasting, passivation, coating and laser marking to meet anti-corrosion and appearance requirements.
Do you accept small prototype orders for CNC turning?
Yes. Taidexing supports single prototype, small-batch trial orders and medium-volume mass production.
What documents do I need to submit for quotation?
Please send 3D files (STEP/IGES preferred) and 2D drawings with tolerances. Attach material, quantity and surface treatment requirements for an accurate quotation.
